Effective Addiction Treatment with Multiple Levels of Care
Substance abuse very rarely occurs in a vacuum. Mental illnesses and substance abuse frequently go hand-in-hand, as evidenced by ongoing research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. As a result, you need treatment programs that address the whole person.
Here are a few of your options for treating alcohol abuse and drug abuse alongside other psychiatric disorders.
Medical Detox for Drugs and Alcohol
Sometimes, you may want to start your recovery with a medical detox. This allows you to get drugs and alcohol out of your system under the watchful eye of our trained medical professionals. We can even prescribe medication to make you more comfortable during this difficult process.
It is a safe space for you to start your treatment and often lasts about one to three weeks.
If you feel like you have already cleared the hurdle of your detox, then the next levels of treatment ranging from inpatient to outpatient might be the right fit for your ongoing care and relapse prevention.
Inpatient Care for Substance Abuse
Once someone has safely detoxed from substances, we often like to get a better understanding of their mental health and substance use through a residential program. During an inpatient stay, you will spend all of your time at our facility for one to six months. For those who need intensive services to manage a serious mental illness, this is the best way to ensure your safety.
This may not be the right fit for you if you have a mild mental health disorder that does not negatively affect your quality of life. It can be quite challenging to take this extended break from your job, school, and family.
While we highly recommend inpatient care, we can find ways around it for a personalized treatment plan that keeps your needs front and center if this is required by your life circumstances.

Outpatient Treatment for Mental Health
When an inpatient program feels too restrictive, you can still make the most of your mental health treatment by enrolling in an outpatient treatment program. Addictive behavior can still be treated this way, and it grants you an additional layer of accountability to remain sober.
There are two core paths you can take through outpatient treatment: partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient.
Partial Hospitalization for More Structure
Partial hospitalization or PHP is a great next step from residential treatment. Here, you will spend six to eight hours a day with our skilled team of professionals. Treatment lasts five days a week, giving you the chance to reconnect with your loved ones and take a break from behavioral therapies on the weekends.
The benefit to PHP over inpatient is that you have more freedom. While you will remain in our treatment program during the day, you have the freedom and flexibility to spend your nights however you choose. You can sleep in your very own bed at the end of the day instead of living within the walls of our treatment center.
The best part is that you still have access to all of the same therapeutic strategies you would receive during inpatient. For example, you may have individual counseling, family therapy, peer support groups, and classes on coping skills and avoiding a relapse of addictive substances.
Intensive Outpatient Programs: IOP for Less Restrictive Care
Eventually, you will want to return to your daily life as much as possible. Work, school, and family cannot wait forever, which is where intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) comes into the picture. Even if you have serious addictive disorders, you can make your way to this lower level by following our road map to your personalized treatment.
IOP is the least restrictive setting for the follow-up of your mental health issues and substance use. You will spend at least three hours in counseling each week and may dive into other therapies as well. For example, you may still meet with a peer group or have family therapy sessions.
The difference is that you are free to come and go between appointments. We even offer flexible scheduling for intensive outpatient programs so that you can tend to all of your outside responsibilities and still make time for your treatment.
Embracing Personalized Treatment Options at Every Level of Care
Just because you decide to transition into one of the above levels of care does not mean that you have no freedom or flexibility to tailor your treatment programs to your unique needs. Even within residential or PHP settings, we take an individual’s personality, family history, alcohol and drug use, and mental health into consideration to prevent relapse.
Some clients will spend more time in individual therapy while others may find that peer support groups are more helpful. Some situations call for more intense family therapy sessions while others need psychoeducation to learn to manage their addiction and mental health.
